CMACC is Celebrating and Observing
50 Years of Service
to the Columbus Community
On May 17, 2012, at the 21st Anniversary
of the Living Faith Awards and the 50th Anniversary of the Columbus Metropolitan Area Church Council, we have
invited The Rev Dr. John Buchanan, Pastor of Broad Street Presbyterian Church from 1975—1985, to be our
keynote speaker.
Our
keynote speaker is an individual who was greatly responsible for developing our church council and was a
leader in the Columbus Ecumenical Community. He also was a national leader in the ecumenical movement
beginning in 1975. CMACC benefited greatly from his leadership.
The Rev. Dr.
John Buchanan was born in Pennsylvania and received his theological education at the University of Chicago Divinity
School. For 10 years, John was pastor of Broad Street Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio, which under his
leadership was cited by U.S. News and World Report as one of five "model congregations" in America. He has been
Senior Pastor of Chicago’s historic Fourth Presbyterian Church since 1985. In 1996, he was elected to a one-year
term as Moderator of the Presbyterian Church (USA), that denomination’s highest office. John
is Editor and Publisher of The Christian Century, one of America’s finest
journals of religious news and commentary.
We are pleased that
John is able to be with us for this milestone celebration.

20th Annual Living
Faith Awards - 2011
The 20th
Annual Living Faith Awards breakfast was held on May 19, 2011. As always, it was held at The Harry
C. Moores Campus Center in Bexley. The breakfast was a hit and everyone enjoyed themselves. Marilyn and Arlene were
ordered to not lift a finger but to enjoy their being honored with the Alvin R. Hadley Social Justice
Award.
The Mistress of
Ceremonies was Rev. Deborah Countiss Lindsay,
Minister of Spiritual Care at First Community Church and recipient of a 2010 Living Faith
Award.
Recipient
of the Presidential Award and guest speaker was
Father Vinny McKiernan, CSP, of the St. Thomas More Newman
Center; a ministry of the Paulist Fathers next to the Ohio State University. He is also celebrating his 80th
birthday, 20 years at the Newman Center and 54 years as a Paulist. As always, Father Vinny held everyone's
attention with his "vin-a-mins."
Cantor Jack Chomsky, Congregation Tifereth Israel
will receive the Interfaith Award. We were treated with a song in
which we were invited to participate.
The Honorary Chairperson was Bishop Bruce R.
Ough, West Ohio Conference, UMC and also a former recipient of the Living Faith
Award.
This year,
Marilyn Shreffler and Arlene Reynolds share the
Alvin R. Hadley Social Justice Award for their total unselfish
commitment and devotion to the Living Faith Awards. Marilyn and Arlene were surprised by Mrs. Fran Ryan,
Senior Advocate and member of the Senior Services Roundtable of Columbus and Franklin County. Mrs. Ryan was
one time city councilwoman, briefly a county commissioner, a Carter Administration appointee to the U.S.
Department of Labor, the first woman to chair the Franklin County Democratic Party and Mayor Michael B.
Coleman's ambassador to the older residents of Columbus. Mrs. Ryan presented Marilyn and Arlene with an
honorarium issued by the Mayor.
