18th Annual Living Faith Awards - 2009
The Metropolitan Area Church Board (MACB) is sponsoring the 18th
Annual Living Faith Awards Breakfast, as a means of recognizing laypersons of
exemplary faith within their vocation and larger community.
The Living Faith Awards Breakfast, Thursday, May 28, 2009,
8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. at the Harry C. Moores Campus Center at Capital
University, Columbus, OH 43209. For the 5th year, an award will be presented to
an interfaith nominee (non-Christian).

Richard Cordray Honorary Chairperson for the 2009 Living Faith Awards
Richard
Cordray was elected Ohio Attorney General in November 2008. He previously
served as Ohio Treasurer of State, Franklin County Treasurer, State
Representative, and as Ohio’s first Solicitor General.
Cordray’s career has been guided by the spirit of community
service and the belief that government should strive to make a positive
difference in the daily lives of its citizens. As state representative, he
sponsored the Ohio Community Service Education Act. An accomplished lawyer,
Cordray taught constitutional law for 13 years at the Ohio State University’s
law school. In 2003, he earned the Presidential Service Award from the Ohio
Legal Assistance Foundation for his work supporting legal services for the poor,
and in 2000 the Human Rights Campaign named him “Humanitarian of the Year” for
his efforts to promote tolerance and understanding in our communities.
His commitment to cutting costs, enhancing economic
development, and promoting financial security earned national recognition in
2008, including the Excellence in Government Leadership Award from the
Association of Government Accountants and NeighborWorks America’s Government
Service Award as the foremost national leader in state government for his work
on foreclosure prevention.
Cordray earned a
master’s degree with first-class honors from Oxford University in England and
graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was editor of the
Law Review. He lives near Grove City with his wife, Peggy and their young twins.
His earliest claim to fame was as an undefeated five-time champion on the
Jeopardy TV show.
LFA Will Present First Social Justice Award at 2009 Breakfast
CMACC
will be presenting
its first ever Social Justice Award at the Living Faith Awards Breakfast on
Thursday, May 28, 2009. The recipient will be the Bishop of the West Ohio
Conference, The United Methodist Church, Bruce R. Ough.
Bishop
Ough is the resident bishop of the Ohio West Area of The United Methodist
Church, where he is the spiritual leader for nearly 220,000 United Methodists in
more than 1,155 congregations in 58 Ohio counties. He has served West Ohio
since September, 2000 and will continue in that role until August 2012. Prior to
his election and consecration as a bishop in July 2000, Bishop Ough served as
the senior pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, a 2,800-member
congregation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Bishop
Ough has received numerous awards, honors, and professional recognitions. He has
also published a number of professional and inspirational articles, including a
thorough study of the small membership church,
Independent, Courageous, Stubborn;
a series of devotional articles for
The
Upper Room Disciplines
in 1985, 1993 and 1996, for
Peniel, and for
Weavings. Bishop
Ough was also a contributor to
The
Spiritual Formation Bible
(Zondervan, 1999).
Bishop
Ough has demonstrated a life-long commitment to social and racial justice.
Before attending seminary, he was employed by the Oglaga Sioux on the Standing
Rock Indian Reservation in the Dakotas as a guidance counselor for native young
people. In West Ohio, Bishop Ough has been a leader in the efforts to stop
casino gambling, a clarion voice for abolishing the death penalty, an advocate
for equal rights for all persons, and a supporter of payday lending reform. In
the fall of 2008, Bishop Ough was a leader in supporting the Muslim community
and speaking out against the “Obsession DVD” that was distributed in Ohio and
other swing states prior to the presidential election. Bishop Ough has teamed
with leaders from across Ohio to advocate for a just and effective public
education system for all children and youth.
He is married to Charlene Ough, and they are the
parents of three sons: Lance (with spouse Cathie in Wilmington, Virginia),
Stuart (with spouse Christine in Indianapolis, Indiana), and Matthew (with
spouse Jory in Chicago, Illinois). They are the proud grandparents of Dashua
Henning Ough and Cailum Isaac Ough, both born in 2006.
